Didn’t plant everything you wanted in the spring? Never fear. Fall is an excellent time for planting. You can plant shrubs and trees until the first winter freeze when the ground is no longer workable. For planting ideas, call Monica at our office.

Create a spring garden this fall. Cooler temperatures reduce stress on transplanted trees, shrubs and perennials, and the warmer days in fall and early winter encourage root growth. The frequent rains in this season keep soil moist and loose and the cloudy days at this time of year reduce stress and allow plants time to acclimate with ease. Because there are also less insects and diseases in the cooler seasons, plants experience less stress during this time. Fall is also when nurseries have plenty of plants, meaning prices are often lower. Planting at this time, long before hot temperatures roll around, gives the new plants months to become established, unlike planting in spring. If you’d like a colorful yard in late winter and early spring, start planting bulbs now.

Types of plants for this fall include lilies, hosta, peonies, irises, ferns and various shrubs and trees. We can help you in choosing your plants, or you can visit a local nursery such as Cross Creek Nursery or Colesville Nursery to see what you like.

Pansies are a great addition to your yard for color all winter. We will be placing our order from the nurseries soon, so if you are interested in these lovely flowers let us know. The price is $6.50 to install each plant, with a ten-plant minimum. Various colors are available.

Protect your plants’ roots with mulch and they will be happier. Make sure these roots don’t dry out from frost by watering twice a week until winter hits. Pro tip: cover delicate plants such as roses or Japanese maples with burlap or plastic before a hard freeze.
